Claughton House

Perched on a hilltop amidst 8 acres of walled-in gardens Claughton House, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, is exceptional. 5 en-suite air-conditioned bedrooms (one of which doubles as TV / Games room). A unique, multi-terraced living space has been created to appreciate one of the best vistas in southern Sri Lanka: a distant harbour bobbing with small fishing boats, swaying coconut palms, an inviting pool, white sands and the alluring waters of the Indian Ocean.

There are five bedrooms, 3 in the main house all with garden and ocean views and a further two towards the rear of the house accessed via a covered walkway. All bedrooms are ensuite and three have secluded tropical spaces with outdoor showers. Set in the rocks on a lower level of the immaculate lawn, lies the pool terrace, with views out to sea and come complete with BBQ and poolside dining pavilion, day bed and sun loungers. Overlooking the surf break, it provides the perfect spot to unwind and recharge.  A yoga shala perches on the top of the hill with inspiring easterly views across the garden and out to sea.Overlooking the bay at the bottom of the garden, the pool terrace floats amongst the rocks. The pool has a shallow platform for relaxing, and the deep end is perfect for a mid-afternoon plunge.Shade can be found under the trees or in the pavilion. Steps lead down from the pool to the private beach gate and onto the white sands of Kudawella Beach. The beach is great for morning runs or evening strolls, and the bay enjoys good surf breaks for both the beginner and the more experienced.  The upper terrace of the main house has a dining level with a polished concrete table for 12. The middle tier has two sofas and a huge bean bag chair, whilst the lower level is decked with seats and a coffee table.
What underpins this villa and makes it an absolute pleasure, is the intelligence with which Geoffrey Bawa designed it.

The natural airflow that glides up the hill and through the open face, refreshes every corner and keeps the space cool. The various tiers of the living area and the placement of the bedrooms – with their secluded courtyards – provide privacy and, at the same time, intimacy. Although the view is awe-inspiring, it’s Claughton House, that allows you to fully appreciate it.
